Our Top 10 Ways To Beat Those Winter Blues

Our Top 10 Ways To Beat Those Winter Blues

After having a few weeks of warm weather, we woke up this morning to some very unexpected COLD, GLOOMY weather. Ever since then, I have been feeling kind of down, and unable to shake these WINTER BLUES. Up until today, I had high hopes that this cold weather was behind us, and have been excitedly looking forward to Spring. But today really knocked the wind right out of my sails.

It comes as no surprise that most people feel down or depressed during the winter months, and it is actually a very common problem that affects a large number of people. It is called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). If you think about it, most people are stuck indoors during the winter months trying to stay hidden from the wintery, gloomy, overcast weather outdoors. And we all know that when we are trapped indoors for long periods of time, we aren’t able to get much needed fresh air, sunlight, and social interaction. All of which are essential to a happy, healthy lifestyle.

Well, if you are like us….trying to fight the winter blues, we have a few solutions to help brighten your moon, and get you back on track! Here are some of our top tips for a better, and maybe even enjoyable winter for you and your entire family!

1. Clean out a closet, drawer, or some other cluttered space in your home! It may be difficult to work up the desire to get started, but we promise, you will not be disappointed. Purging items that you do not need or no longer use, can change your whole mood. It may sound crazy, but it’s true! It helps to free up extra space in your home which can be very freeing. And to add a cherry on top of your already uplifted mood, donate your un-needed items to someone in need. By doing so, you will not only feel great, but you are also contributing to uplifting others as well.

2. Have an at home spa day! This is a very cost effective way to have a fun day full of relaxation. For starters, it always feels like a win/win situation when you are saving a little money. Because let’s face it, who really likes to spend tons of money on things that you can easily do yourself in the comfort of your own home!?!? And not to mention, you won’t have to brave that cold weather to get to a spa. And by doing a few quick Pinterst searches, you can easily whip up some fabulous beauty concoctions right in your own kitchen. Spa days are always nice to enjoy with family, or you could even invite a few friends over to share in the fun.

3. Have a family game day! Pull out those board games, dust them off, and have at it! Let everyone have a chance to pick out their favorite, and give each person a turn to choose the game of their choice. And to make a great time even better, throw in some snacks! We enjoy making homemade popcorn to go along with our family game nights. And we all our have favorite popcorn toppings to add to each of our bowls. Snacks and games always brings tons of joy and laughter in our home, and is sure to brighten the gloomiest of winter days.

4. Write a handwritten letter! Handwritten letter have become obsolete in our fast-paced, gotta have it now societyWith text messaging, emails, Facebook, Twitter, and the various other forms of electronic communications that we have now-a-days, handwritten letters have become a thing of the past. But they don’t have to be! In fact, I believe that we should bring them back into style! They are more personal that other forms of communication, and they make the recipient feel beyond special! Handwritten letters may take a little more time, but they are so worth it. I actually received a little hand written note from one of our sweet clients last week, and it honestly made my entire day! And even a week later, it still bring a smile to my face every time I think about it. So, not only could writing a handwritten letter make you feel happier, especially a thank you note or one regarding something positive, but think about how it could potentially make your recipient feel! Now, that is definitely passing happiness along, and it doesn’t get much better than that, my friends!

5. Rearrange a room! Sometimes when being stuck in doors, you find yourself desperate for a little change. Maybe making a change inside of your own home can be the trick! And it doesn’t have to be over-the-top, full on redecorating. In other words, you could simply rearrange some of your current furniture or decor around a bit to freshen up your space! And the great part about it is that you don’t even need to spend a single dime to do it! You could  create a whole new look in a matter of minutes! And to add to the fun, let the whole family join in on the action! Who knows, the other members of your family may have some great ideas that you would have never even thought of without their input. And even though your spouse or kids may not act like they want to be included in the task, we promise they will at least appreciate the fact that they are included in the process. And who knows, they may even enjoy themselves and find a new talent for decorating that they never knew they had before.

6. Write down a list of goals! This could be long term, short term, or a mixture of both! The point is, writing down goals gives you something to work at and look forward to. And having something to look forward to generates a feeling of hope and excitement for the future. And don’t write goals down alone… bring your entire family in on the process. They could be 2 or 102, and could find something to contribute to the list! And the great thing about lists is having the opportunity to see how much progress you are able to make as time progresses. And nothing feels better than working hard and finally having the opportunity to cross one of those goals off of your list. Sometimes, we even add things to our list that we didn’t know that we needed to do, but we did it anyway! And so, we quickly jot it down just so we can cross it off! Having that feeling of accomplishment can be quite addicting! With each completed goal, you will add another layer of excitement which will fill you and will carry you on to working on your next goal. And before you know it, you will be completing goals and crossing them off of your list in record time! And it is even better when working towards goals together as a family. You can encourage and help one another on the journey. And nothing is better than working together as a team with the people that you love the most.

7. Have a conversation with your loved ones. We are not talking about your average conversation here. We are talking about a sit down,  face-to-face conversation. It can be about important things, or about nothing important at all. Face-to-face conversations help you to reconnect with the ones you care about the most. And by doing so, it helps them to see just how much you truly do care about them by taking time out of your busy schedule to focus on them alone. Sometimes you may need to have a much needed deep conversation about something important. Or maybe you need to clear the air and apologize for something you may have done or said. Or you may even need to let the other person know that they have upset you or hurt your feelings and want to make them aware of how this made you feel. Whatever it may be, it is very god to do all of the above in order to keep healthy relationships with those around you; especially the ones you love. They say laughter is the best medicine, and sometimes you just need to sit back and have a good laugh with the ones you love the most. Whether it is your spouse, children, extended family, or friends, it is always very important to take time to have an uninterrupted conversation to keep open lines of communication flowing.

8. Fully complete 1 task. From start to finish, focus on one task and do not stop until it is fully completed. Like 100% completed. This is not easy, or for the faint of heart. You may want to quit, cry, or even scream… but whatever you do, do not stop! Don’t just get kind of close to finishing. Pull up your boot straps, roll up those sleeves and get to it! And do not stop until you are finished with whatever it may be that you are working on. This may be something large like repainting a room in your home, or it may simply be completing every last piece of dirty laundry. And we mean washing drying, and putting it all away. With having to do laundry for 6 people in our home, we would take repainting the room any day of the week.. HAHA! So, no matter how large or small the task, for heavens sake… just get to the end of it! That sense of accomplishment will make you feel a million times better! And it you followed our advice in #6, you may even be able to check it off of your list which will mean you would feel doubly good!

9. Cook a meal together as a family. Start by letting everyone choose the meal together. As we talked about earlier, people like to be included on decisions. No matter how large or small it may be, everyone likes to feel like they are a part of something. Especially kiddos! So, why not let them help choose and make a family meal together. Give tasks, according to age, and let everyone go to town with helping as best they can. We have even found that by letting our little ones help in areas such as cooking (while being supervised by an adult),  they are more apt to help in other area in our home. And one of our most favorite family meals has to be breakfast for dinner! Maybe it is the delicious food, or the simple fact that it is almost like we are breaking the food rules by eating eggs, pancakes, and bacon for dinner; but whatever it is… it is total perfection every time!  By the time we have finished cooking, and sit down to eat our meal, there is never a shortage of laughter and smiles all around.

10. Do an at home workout. There is actually a scientific link between happiness and working out! Both are independently associated with a boost to the immune system, and also with the release of endorphins. Even as little as 15-20 minutes a day could make a huge impact on your mood and overall physical health! And not to mention, exercising can also help you to lose some of those unwanted pounds put on from all of those holiday meals. And I don’t know about y’all, but losing a little weight never ceases to put a smile on my face.
